What is the difference between plaque and tartar?

Every day, a thin, sticky film called plaque forms on your teeth from bacteria and food particles. Regular brushing and flossing can easily remove plaque before it causes harm.

However, if plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar—a rough, calcified deposit that sticks to your teeth. Unlike plaque, tartar can’t be brushed away; it requires professional dental cleaning to be removed. Tartar not only harbors more bacteria but also increases the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Keeping up with daily oral hygiene is key to preventing plaque from turning into tartar and maintaining a healthy smile.
