Black spots on teeth are not always cavities; they can also be caused by staining from food, drinks, or tobacco, tartar buildup, excess fluoride (fluorosis), old fillings, natural pits in teeth, or even a dead tooth. Cavities, however, are caused by decay and often feel sticky, rough, or sensitive. If a black spot doesn’t go away with brushing or grows over time, it’s best to see a dentist for evaluation. While staining and tartar can be removed with cleaning, cavities require fillings, and a dead tooth may need a root canal. Regular dental checkups can help determine the cause and best treatment.
